As if things couldn’t get any better, the following week Sky arrived in London.

She tried to make it this big surprise by hiding behind one of the giant flower vases in the lobby and jumping out at me when I got home from school, throwing her arms out really wide and screaming ‘SURPRIIIIIIIIIIIIISE!’ at the top of her lungs.

I hated to burst her bubble, but when you’re the most famous pop star in the world, it’s difficult to get anywhere without someone seeing you. The fact that she’d landed in Heathrow had been all over social media and Grace, who is obsessed with celebrity gossip, had already squealed her head off during morning break and shoved her phone displaying someone’s tweet under my nose.

Still, when Sky jumped out, I totally tried to act surprised.

‘OH MY GOODNESS, WOW, WHAT A SURPRISE!’ I screamed. ‘I HAD NO IDEA! WOW! SKY’S HERE, EVERYBODY!’

She dropped her arms as Matthew sniggered behind reception. ‘All right. How long have you known?’

‘No, no, I had no idea! I’m so shocked!’

‘If you’re really going to have your own TV show, you’re going to have to improve your acting.’ She grinned and threw her arms around me. Thanks to her massive high heels, she had to bend down to pull me in towards her. ‘How are you?’

‘Very busy and important. You?’

‘Oh, you know –’ she sighed dramatically, running a hand through her thick black curls – ‘just trying to come up with a new hit song.’

‘I loved your last one.’

‘The critics thought it lacked emotion. Maybe I would sing more emotionally if my boyfriend ever bothered to call.’

‘I don’t know about that but I can tell you the critics are WRONG. Grace and I know all the words. Want me to perform it to you?’

‘Who could refuse such an offer?’ She smiled gratefully. ‘You too busy and important to hang out at some point this weekend?’

‘I’ll have to check my schedule with my assistant, Fritz. When were you thinking?’

‘Saturday afternoon pamper session?’

‘I have the school fair.’ I rolled my eyes. ‘It will be the first day of half-term and the teachers are forcing us to go back to school for it. I’ve actually volunteered to help out at the cupcake stand.’

She raised her eyebrows. ‘They’re letting you bake something?’

‘Hey! I am an excellent baker!’ I protested. ‘But don’t worry, I’m not in charge of baking the cupcakes, just selling them to raise money.’

Hazel loomed into view behind Sky, with Timothy following behind her carrying several large hat boxes.

‘Sky, have you met my aunt? This is Hazel.’

‘Actually, your aunt was the one who organised for me to come over,’ Sky said, beaming, as Hazel approached us.

‘Sky, darling, how is your room?’ Hazel asked.

‘Perfect, as ever. Flick, is your mom around? I haven’t seen her yet and I want to thank her. She left a sweet welcome card on my pillow.’

‘Oh, Christine is busy with meetings all day,’ Hazel groaned, rolling up the sleeves of her silk coat. ‘Work, work, work. That’s all she does.
